Julius Steiner (born July 31, 1816 in Charlottenburg ; † May 5, 1889 in Schwerin ) was an actor, director and later director of the court theater in Schwerin.

life and work

Julius Steiner was the son of the Prussian court gardener Georg Steiner (1774–1834), who headed the royal garden administration of Charlottenburg . Julius Steiner grew up there and first learned to be a court gardener like his father. Through intensive contacts with the artists of the court theater, he stood on stage for the first time in Krefeld at the age of 26 after studying at Berlin University.

Julius Steiner's career as a theater director in Lübeck (1842–49) was shown in his autobiography (see literature). Initially playing in traveling theaters, he came to Lübeck via the city theaters in Bamberg and Nuremberg, where he was theater director during the revolutionary year of 1848–1849 has been. In this phase he wrote his critical work on the theater of Vormärz: " On the reorganization of the theater situation " (Bremen 1849, see literature).

After stints in Magdeburg and Dessau, Julius Steiner was appointed technical director and senior director at the Schwerin court theater in 1855, where he was court theater director from 1863 to 1883.
