Julius Tröger (chemist)
Julius Tröger (born October 10, 1862 in Leipzig , † July 29, 1942 in Braunschweig ) was a German chemist and professor.
Live and act
Tröger was born in Leipzig and studied at the University of Leipzig between 1882 and 1888. He established a connection through the reaction of p -toluidine and formaldehyde , which was given the systematic name (±) -2,8-dimethyl-6 H , 12 H -5,11-methanodibenzo [ b , f ] [1,5] diazocine, but is better known under the name Trögersche Base . Tröger was unable to explain the structure and therefore only received a grade of 3 for his doctoral thesis from the head of the department Johannes Wislicenus in 1887 . It was another 48 years before the structure could be clarified.
The structure of Tröger's base contains two conformationally hindered nitrogen atoms , which no longer allow the normally occurring Walden's reversal (inversion) and thus lead to the nitrogen atoms being the chiral centers of the molecule in this case . The separation of the enantiomers by chromatography on a chiral stationary phase was carried out in 1944 by Vladimir Prelog . The process used there established itself as a separation process for enantiomers.
In 1888 he moved to the University of Braunschweig , where he stayed until his retirement in 1928. Tröger died in Braunschweig in 1942.
