Julodis onopordi is a beetle from the family of the jewel beetle and the subfamily Julodinae. The genus Julodis is represented worldwide with 77 species , six of which can be found in Europe. The species Julodis onopordi is represented in Europe with the subspecies Julodis onopordi fidelissima and Julodis onopordi sommeri .

Notes on the name

The beetle was first described by Fabricius in 1783 under the name Buprestis onopordi . After briefly characterizing the physical characteristics, Fabricius cites : habitat in Hispaniae Onopordine ( Latin lives on Onopordon in Spain) and gives the species the species name onopórdi (from Onopórdon , the donkey thistle , means that the beetle can be found there).

Eschscholtz divided the genus Buprestis into different genera in 1829 . The species without a label, whose chest is flat and the body hairy , he summarized to the genus Jalodis (Julodis) . This also includes the kind onopordi . According to Schenkling, the generic name Julodis should correctly be called Iulódis , is from old Gr . ιουλώδης (iulódes) derived and means the Iulus, similar to millipede . Mannerheim reports, on the other hand, that Eschscholtz himself changed the name Julodis by hand in the edition of his Entomological Atlas to Jalodis that was presented to Mannerheim . Mannerheim, however, interprets this change as an oversight by Eschscholtz and explains the name Julodis with altgr. ιόλος (iólos, fur), alluding to the generic feature also mentioned by Eschscholtz, the strong hairiness of the species of the genus.

The beetle described by Brullé under the name Buprestis onopordinis describes the related beetle Julodis pubescens .

Physique of the beetle

The elongated body, round in cross section, is pointed at the back. The beetle is very hairy and about 25 millimeters long.

The antennae are eleven links, the last seven links are sawn inwards. The approximately square upper lip is cut out in front, its corners rounded. The strong upper jaws are slightly curved and have a small, blunt tooth on the inside. The jaws are four-parted, the elongated end part is egg-shaped and truncated. The lip switches are three-part, the end part is conical and trimmed.

The pronotum is a little wider than it is long, broadest at the base. It is triangularly widened towards the wing cover seam. It is irregularly deeply dotted .

The elytra are densely dotted. Each wing cover has four gray-haired longitudinal stripes, which are interrupted by larger, recessed points. The label has receded.

The broad tarsi are all five-limbed.

Way of life

The eggs are initially greenish white and later turn yellowish white. The females lay the eggs on the ground without any special care. The larvae of the 1st instar have the typical shape of the jewel beetle, but the abdomen is very short. The strong upper jaws and the thick hairs of the larvae allow them to dig in with ease. They are polyphagous and eat different roots of herbs, bushes or even trees in the ground.

distribution

Of the species Julodis onopordi , the nominate form Julodis onopordi onopordi is restricted to North Africa. In Europe, the subspecies Julodis onopordi fidelissima is only found on the Iberian Peninsula (in the south and west of Spain and Portugal), the subspecies Julodis onopordi sommeri in the north and east of Spain and in France. However, the distribution areas of the two subspecies overlap.
