Count Carl Gustaf Mannerheim [ ˈmɑnːɛrhɛim ] (born August 10, 1797 in Askainen , † October 9, 1854 in Stockholm ) was a Finnish politician and entomologist .

Life

Carl Gustav was the eldest son of Carl Erik Mannerheim (1759–1837). He entered the civil service and from 1819 worked as a secretary in Saint Petersburg . In 1833 he was appointed governor of the province of Vaasa and a little later also of Vyborg . From 1839 until his death he was president of the court in Vyborg.

In addition, Mannerheim devoted himself to entomological studies and built up a scientific beetle collection. His territorial collection focus was on western North America, then Russian America . However, he was never in this province, but let helpers help him.

Mannerheim had been a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg since 1827 and a foreign member of the Swedish Academy of Sciences since 1825 . He was awarded the Russian Order of Saint Stanislaus and was a Knight of the Order of Saint Vladimir . When La Société Cuvierienne was founded in 1838 , he was one of the 140 founding members of the society.

Carl Gustaf Mannerheim was married to Eva Vilhelmina von Schantz (1810–1895). The couple had three daughters and three sons, u. a. Carl Robert Mannerheim (1835-1914). His third child was Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim .
