background

The Broadway producer Billy Rose took Rodgers and Hart for his circus-musical project from Hollywood to New York. He rented New York's largest theater, the Hippodrome Theater, and had it rebuilt so that it looked like a big top inside. The production devoured the then record sum of $ 340,000. It was also so costly to run that the show, while successful, had to close after 233 performances.

This was the first musical that George Abbott (in collaboration with John Murray Anderson ) staged.

action

A story similar to Romeo and Juliet serves as a bracket for music, dance, acrobatics, animal training and variety shows :

The offspring of two rival circus entrepreneurial families, Matt Jr. and Mickey, are not allowed to get together because the heads of the two families Matthew Mulligan and John A. Considine have been falling out for ages. Considine, Mickey's father, has other worries: His circus is on the verge of ruin, among other things due to his alcohol problem. To avert this, Considines “Press Agent” Claudius B. Bowers advises against insurance fraud .

In the end, the lovers manage to reconcile their fathers.
