June Smith

June Smith (* as June Robinson on June 9, 1930 in Edinburgh ; † May 6, 2016 ) was a British - Australian jazz singer , trumpeter and music teacher who (like her husband Lew) held a key position in the music scene in Perth .

Live and act

June Robinson was the daughter of a singer and pianist; her father played the saxophone. She began her career at the age of 16 as a trumpeter and vocalist in the girls band of Blanche Coleman. Three years later she became a member of Ivy Benson's orchestra , with whom she performed in British music halls and overseas in troupe entertainment. In 1951 she met the woodwind player Lew Smith in Yorkshire, whom she married a year later. In 1955 the couple played in the Denny Boyce Orchestra. In 1961 they emigrated to Australia.

In Melbourne, June Smith was soon a singer in the rock band Maximum Load , which had a local hit with Riding Through the Dandenong Ranges . In 1974 the couple moved to Perth; there June Smith also appeared on the radio, also with the WA Symphony Orchestra. She was also a member of Helen Matthews' Jazz Divas and later founded the June Smith and the Apple Band with her husband . In 1992 she founded the Club Jazz Fremantle .

In 2005 she was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Perth Jazz Society. She performed until 2013. In the field of jazz, she was involved in four recording sessions between 1984 and 2005. a. with the Swan City Jazzmen, the Elysian Fields Orchestra and the Lazy River Jazz Band.
