The Capivara power plant ( Portuguese Usina Hidrelétrica de Capivara or UHE Capivara ) is a hydropower plant in Brazil that damms the Paranapanema to the Capivara reservoir ( Portuguese Reservatório or Represa Capivara ). The Paranapanema forms the border between the municipalities of Taciba , São Paulo and Porecatu , Paraná .
Construction of the power plant began in 1971. It was put into operation in 1977. The power plant is owned by Duke Energy International Geração Paranapanema and is also operated by Duke Energy.
Barrier structure
The barrier structure consists of a dam with a length of 1500 m and a maximum height of 59 m. The top of the dam is at a height of 339 m above sea level . The volume of the dam is 7,268,500 m³. The weir system with the flood relief , consisting of eight gates, is located on the right side of the river. A maximum of 17,248 m³ / s can be discharged via the flood relief.
Reservoir
With a normal storage target of 334 m, the reservoir extends over an area of around 576 km² and holds 11.743 billion m³ of water - of which 5.724 billion m³ can be used to generate electricity. The minimum congestion target is 321 m, the maximum is 336 m.
power plant
The Capivara power plant has four machines and an installed capacity of 640 MW . It is the most powerful power plant on Paranapanema. The first machine was put into operation on March 10, 1977, the last on March 10, 1979.
The power plant's four Francis turbines each have an output of 160 MW. The nominal voltage of the generators is 14.4 kV . In the switchgear , the generator voltage is increased from 14.4 kV to 460 kV using power transformers.
The maximum height of fall is 50 m.
