The Jung R 40 C series are diesel-hydraulic locomotives. 14 copies were built by the Arnold Jung locomotive factory in Kirchen (Sieg) . It was intended for shunting use. An eight-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine with an output of 400 hp served as the drive. The power is transmitted by means of a jackshaft and connecting rods. The locomotive is the third generation of young locomotives, her successor was the young R 42 C .
Some locomotives were still around after 2010.
development
With the experience of the Wehrmacht locomotives, Jung developed a range of types for diesel locomotives with different engine outputs in the 1950s. This program contained locomotives with an engine output of 120 HP to 600 HP as well as two-axle to four-axle versions. In the type designation R 40 C, the purpose of the locomotive ( R = shunting locomotive), the engine power ( 40 = engine power with 400 hp) and the wheel arrangement C were specified.
14 locomotives of the R 40 C were built by 1958, although the successor type Jung R 42 C was offered from 1955. Most of them were delivered to private industrial railways and private railway companies such as the Neukölln-Mittenwalder Railway , the Tecklenburger Nordbahn and the Bremervörde-Osterholzer Railway . The Bundeswehr received a locomotive . Locomotives were also sold to Sweden and Switzerland .
technology
The locomotives are front-mounted locomotives with a centrally positioned driver's cab.
They were powered by an eight-cylinder, four-stroke, in-line diesel engine from MAN with an output of 400 hp. The transmission was measured with a fluid transmission from Voith realized via an axis group arranged behind the dummy shaft was driven via driving axles. The larger front end of the locomotive contained the engine, the smaller the fluid transmission.
commitment
Most locomotives were replaced by propeller shaft driven machines in the late 1980s . Some were sold abroad, some were scrapped. There are possibly surviving specimens.
Port (Düsseldorf)
Three locomotives were sold to the ports of the city of Düsseldorf . A locomotive was used there until 1977. It was then sold to a track construction company in Italy, where it was last seen in 2008.
Krefeld port authority
Two locomotives were used at the port and rail operations of the city of Krefeld . One locomotive was sold to Italy in 1982. The locomotive was still available in 2016. The other locomotive was in service until 2000 and was parked with a serious gearbox damage. After the repair, the locomotive was sold to England and was still available in 2015 on a tunnel track construction site in the London area.
Graubünden cement works
A locomotive delivered to Switzerland was in operation in Untervaz from 1956 . In 1996 she was handed over to Austria and used in Feldkirch . In 2018 it was in good condition.
