JMLA in Germany

history

The JMLA was introduced in 1984 and has so far been dropped by 85,000 musicians. In 2005, the junior badge was introduced in addition to the three existing badges of achievement.

Power levels

The young musician achievement badge is available in four levels. All badges consist of a practical test in which the instrumental playing is tested and a theoretical test in which, in addition to a theory block, aural training is also tested.

Junior badge

The junior badge is presented to the bronze badge and is used to encourage young musicians to practice in their first years. The level of difficulty is chosen so that the level of proficiency is achieved after one to two years of instrumental lessons. In contrast to the other badges, the responsibility for implementing the junior badge lies with the music associations and not with the association. Another difference is the evaluation, since this badge is the only one that cannot "fail". The number of points achieved can be broken down into three performance levels. (Excellent, good and incomplete result).

Bronze badge

The bronze badge (D1) can be taken after an instrumental training of 2 to 3 years and an age of up to 25 years. The exam is held by the responsible music association.

Silver badge

The silver badge (D2) can be taken by musicians who have mastered their instrument confidently and who are no longer than 25 years old. The exam is held by the responsible music association.

Gold badge

The gold badge (D3) is for particularly talented young musicians. The prerequisite is an age of at least 16 years and the possession of the silver badge for at least two years. The examination is taken directly by the Federation of German Brass Music Associations in the BDB Music Academy in Staufen .

exams

Members of the BDB who are of the required age are admitted to the test . The exams are subject to the guidelines of the young wind players in the Federation of German Brass Music Associations.

history

At the end of the 1960s / beginning of the 1970s, the young musician performance badge (JMLA) in the bronze, silver and gold performance levels was introduced as a pilot project in Lower Austria and Upper Austria to raise the level of musical training and to contribute to motivated music-making during the training period. The other federal states of Austria gradually followed suit. At that time, the age limit was set at the age of 24. With the recognition of the Austrian Youth Brass Musicians as a youth organization, the age limit was raised to 30 years.

From the age of 31, the newly created musician achievement badge in bronze, silver and gold can be completed with the same examination content and under the same conditions as the young musician achievement badge. Today (2011) around 8000 young people who are learning a wind instrument or percussion take the exams every year. The training scheme has been expanded to include the elementary level (qualification: junior performance badge ), since today children and young people start taking instrumental lessons earlier and earlier and, at the same time, the requirements for the young musician's badges in bronze, silver and gold have increased considerably in some cases.

Power levels

The musician or young musician badge comes in four levels:

  • Proficiency level E (elementary level) - junior achievement badge
  • Proficiency level U (lower level) - Bronze achievement badge
  • Proficiency Level M (Intermediate Level) - Silver Achievement Badge
  • Proficiency level O (advanced level) - gold achievement badge

Cooperation with Musikschulwerk

In the last few decades, a collaboration has developed between brass music clubs and associations as well as music schools. In September 2008, for example, new guidelines for the young musician achievement badge were issued. Together with the music schools, a common curriculum and joint transfer examinations or examinations for the young musician achievement badge were agreed, whereby the Austrian brass music youth was able to position itself. In the subject-specific area of Schlagwerk, adjustments were made in cooperation with the group leaders of the Schlagwerk Conference of Austrian Music Schools, which came into force on September 1, 2010.
