Junkers L 2

The Junkers L 2 was a liquid-cooled six-cylinder - aircraft engine of the Junkers engine GmbH in Dessau .

development

Hugo Junkers used for his 1919-built airliner F 13 as driving a BMW IIIa -Motor, in 1917 even during the First World War was created and its production at the instigation of the end of the war victors are set had, but still existed remnants of that. When these began to run out in 1922, since BMW was not interested in resuming production , he decided to rebuild the engine, especially since its workshops had already produced spare parts for BMW engines during the war. BMW raised no objections and so in 1923 Junkers reopened its Magdeburg engine factory, which was closed in 1915, this time in Dessau, and began designing and manufacturing aircraft engines.

Junkers designer Otto Mader was responsible for the development of the L 2 and, due to the restrictions of the Versailles Treaty , which initially only allowed aircraft engines up to a maximum of 200 hp (147 kW) in Germany, it initially had an output of 195 hp (143 kW) with a displacement of 19 l. The type received its type approval in 1924 and then went into series production, whereby the performance could gradually be increased due to the increasingly relaxed regulations and the output in the end was up to 60 pieces per month. The last version of the L 2 had a take-off power of 265 hp (195 kW) and the L 2a, which was also built in series, appeared in 1925 as a further increased version with increased engine speed and a take-off power of 280 hp (206 kW).

commitment

The L 2 was mainly installed in different versions of the F 13. It was also used as the middle drive for the three-engine G 23 . Another Junkers type, where it was used, was also three-engined and AB Flygindustri in Limhamn in Malmö prepared G 24 . There it served either as the main drive or, in addition to a centrally positioned L-5 engine, as an external motor on both sides.
