Yuri Yevgenyevich Ivanov

Yuri Evgenjewitsch Ivanov ( Russian Юрий Евгеньевич Иванов ; born October 28, 1957 in Wolsk , Saratov Oblast ; found dead on the Turkish coast in August 2010 ) was a Russian officer. Most recently, he was Major General of the Russian Armed Forces and Managing Director of the Military Foreign Intelligence Service GRU . He was washed up dead on the Turkish coast in August 2010; the background to his death is unclear.

Military career

Ivanov joined the Soviet Army in 1975 as a soldier. In 1980 he graduated from a military college in Kiev (MV Frunze Kiev higher military academy). From 2000 he served in the North Caucasus in the field of military reconnaissance. In 2006 he was promoted to the management level of the Russian military intelligence service GRU .

Circumstances of death

Officials in Russia reported that Ivanov was vacationing in Latakia , Syria, where he was killed in a swimming accident. Other sources say Ivanov was in Syria on business. The alleged scene of the accident is only a few kilometers away from Russia's strategically important and only Mediterranean base, the Tartus naval base .

The exact circumstances of his death are not known to the public. The heavily decayed body of Ivanov was found by Turkish fishermen on the coast weeks after he was believed to have died. His body was transferred to Moscow in secrecy. The military newspaper Krasnaya Zvezda (Red Star) reported about his death only after Ivanov's funeral.
