Jurij Chěžka
Jurij Chěžka (born July 22, 1917 in Horka / Hórki , † in October 1944 near Kragujevac , Yugoslavia ) was a Sorbian poet. He is considered to be one of the first representatives of modern Sorbian poetry and the most progressive representative of Sorbian literature of his time.
The son of a stone worker from Horka attended the Archbishop's Gymnasium in Prague from the age of twelve and began studying Slavic and German in 1937 in the Czechoslovak capital . In 1939 he was drafted into the Wehrmacht; In 1944 he deserted in Yugoslavia and died in an unknown way.
A plaque commemorates Chěžka in his birthplace. The Sorbian primary school in Crostwitz bears his name.
