Juris Kiukucāns

Juris Kiukucāns (born November 6, 1956 in Kaunas ) is a former Brigadier General of the Latvian Armed Forces .

Life

Juris Kiukucāns was born in what was then the Lithuanian SSR . After finishing school, he started working as an electrical engineer in 1975. In addition, from 1981 to 1989 he studied electrical engineering at the Riga Polytechnic Institute .

In addition to his mother tongue, he also speaks English and Russian.

Military career

As part of the detachment of Latvia from the Soviet Union, Kiukucāns joined the newly emerging National Guard ( Zemessardze in Latvian ) in 1992 and received the rank of major . In the period that followed, he took on various tasks there (including as a brigade commander). In 1994 he moved to the headquarters of the armed forces as head of the personnel department and was promoted to lieutenant colonel a year later . As part of the Latvian collaboration in the Partnership for Peace , Kiukucāns was appointed representative of the Latvian Armed Forces to NATO in 1997. He was promoted to colonel in 2000 and later that year was appointed commander of the Latvian National Guard.

On February 22, 2004, Kiukucāns was appointed Chief of Staff of the Latvian Armed Forces and promoted to Brigadier General in June of the same year. In December 2006 he was appointed deputy chief of the armed forces. He then took over the post of military representative of Latvia (which had since joined the military alliance) at NATO until he was replaced by Andis Dilāns . He then worked in the Latvian Ministry of Defense .

Juris Kiukucāns was retired on November 3, 2016 at a formal ceremony at the Ministry of Defense.
