Just Songeon

Just Songeon (in the Savoy patois: Justo Sonjon ; born May 17, 1880 in Sillingy , Haute-Savoie , † March 30, 1940 in Paris ) was a French teacher , trade unionist, poet and writer of the Franco-Provencal language .

Life

Just Songeon grew up in the village of La Combe de Sillingy . He studied in the teachers' college ( École normal d'instituteurs ) in Bonneville in the Arve Valley and worked as a teacher for literature, English and geography in various communities in Haute-Savoie from 1906 to 1931 in Annemasse . In the interwar period, he advocated teaching in the Savoyard language, the patois savoyard , which had previously been suppressed by the educational authorities , and he encouraged the students of the teachers' college in Bonneville to take into account the local conditions and the to include the regional culture and language of Savoy . He wrote about the Savoyard dialect : "La langue dans laquelle ils expriment leurs souffrances et leurs joies, dans laquelle ils échangent leurs idées, notre patois, n'est pas langue morte, mais bien vivante et se renouvelle sans cesse…".

Songeon served during the First World War for 52 months as a soldier, first in the French army and from 1917 as a translator for the American expeditionary troops and processed impressions from the war in part of his literary work; the songs printed in the volume Lô coups de mula du p'tio de la Comba he wrote during the war.

He was a member of the socialist party and converted to the communists in 1920 . As a leading activist in the department, he was involved in the founding of the Communist Union of Haute Savoie and various local cooperatives.

Just Songeon wrote under the name P'tio de la Comba in the patois of the Savoy region of Genevois . He was one of the Franco-Provencal dialect writers who formed the Ècoula de Remelyi literary group in the 19th and early 20th centuries .

In Sillingy a street is named in memory of the poet and activist.
