Justinus Woehrer

Justinus Wöhrer (born March 4, 1872 in Kleintraberg , Oberneukirchen , † December 18, 1943 in Apolo , Bolivia ) was an Austrian Cistercian abbot and missionary .

life and work

Josef Wöhrer joined the Cistercian monastery Wilhering Abbey and took the religious name Justinus . He received his doctorate and was appointed prior of the monastery on September 14, 1915 . From 1916 to 1928 he was director of the collegiate high school . In 1917 he received the Knight's Cross of the Franz Joseph Order .

When Wilhering Abbey (also encouraged by the Abbot of Schlierbach Abbey , Alois Wiesinger ) ventured into a missionary settlement in Apolo, Bolivia, in 1928, Abbot Gabriel Fazeny Wöhrer proclaimed titular abbot of Säusenstein Abbey and entrusted him with the missionary work. Wöhrer founded the Caupolicán Indian mission in 1928 (after the name of the province at the time), which has since been abandoned, and the Apolo Cistercian monastery in 1929 , which still exists.

A memorial plaque for him has been attached to the parish church in Traberg since 2013.
