Justino António Cardoso (2014)

Justino António Cardoso (* 1960 in Namapa-Eráti , Nampula Province , Portuguese East Africa ) is a Mozambican draftsman and cartoonist .

Life

As the son of a teacher, Cardoso taught himself to draw as a child. In 1978 the newspaper Tempo published its first comics about the history of the resistance against the colonial power Portugal . In April 1984 he was imprisoned in Malawi for about a month under the regime of Hastings Kamuzu Banda . In 1989 he took part in a comic book exhibition in Pyongyang as part of the 13th World Festival of Young People and Students . In Nampula , Cardoso founded the comic strip interest group.

Between 1979 and 1984 he worked with the Mozambican Liberation Front FRELIMO and created a series of posters for the then President Samora Machel . During this time he met the painter and sculptor Malangatana . He founded Muhupi , Nampula's first independent newspaper, took an active part in the city's cultural life and continued his work as an artist. Cardoso worked as the coordinator of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation in Nampula and began using comics in 2005 to reform the public sector. Over the years he has addressed the various faces of corruption and its effects in numerous exhibitions.

Cardoso is also considered the historian of his country. His black and white drawings tell the story of Mozambique from the arrival of Vasco da Gama to the present day; his books and exhibitions show this side of his work. In 2011 he showed an exhibition in the Ethnographic Museum in Nampula with graphics about the life of the first President of Mozambique Samora Machel. In 2012, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the founding of FRELIMO, Cardoso presented an exhibition about the life and work of Eduardo Mondlane , the first President of FRELIMO.

His current work shows his commitment to educating people about his country's social problems. In 2015, with Sorriso da Ébola , he illustrated the dangers of this deadly disease and how to prevent its spread. In 2016 he made an exhibition on the negative effects of child marriage , a current and worrying problem in Nampula Province.

His drawings are current; they react to developments in his country and also contain traditions. They keep showing the value and importance of African multiculturalism. Quick lines and pictures appear in a frame, drawings in black and white describe a feeling of love or the struggle for freedom and the hope for a better life. The Brazilian journalist Flora Pereira da Silva from afREAKa gave him the nickname Justino o épico (German roughly: “The epic Justino”).

Cardoso lives and works in Nampula.
