Lenzburg correctional facility
The Lenzburg correctional facility (JVA Lenzburg ) is the largest cantonal prison in the Swiss canton of Aargau . It consists of the Lenzburg prison and the canton's central prison and has 300 prison places. The most dangerous offenders in Switzerland are housed in the high-security departments SITRAK I and II.
history
The Lenzburg JVA was opened in 1864 as the most architecturally modern prison in Europe at the time. The plans were drawn by the Aargau architect Robert Moser . A model prison for 230 inmates was created for the time. With its first prison director, Johann Rudolf Müller , the institution also had progressive approaches in terms of organization for the time. For example, Müller banned corporal punishment for the first time in prison and chain punishment was also abolished. In addition, the introduction of the pekulium goes back to him , a kind of remuneration for prisoners. His reforms were later implemented in Lenzburg throughout the entire Swiss penal system.
The biometric control of visitors to the Lenzburg prison was already implemented in 1999, and since 2006 there has been a cell phone jamming system in a Swiss prison for the first time . The increasing demographic change in population was also taken into account and a separate age department “60plus” was set up. Since 2015, the prison has also had its own measures department for 59 prisoners.
