The Isla Diatomeas ( Spanish for diatoms island , in Argentina Isla Julieta , in the UK Kármán Iceland ) is a 1.5 km long island in front of the Danco Coast of Graham Lands on the Antarctic Peninsula . It is located 3 miles south-southeast of Valdivia Point in Hughes Bay .

Chilean scientists named them after the diatoms (also known as diatoms ) that form greenish scum skins here . Argentine scientists, however, named her after the Julieta , in 1814 one of the ships of the Argentine admiral William Brown in the Argentine War of Independence (1810-1818). The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee in turn named it in 1978 after the Hungarian-US American helicopter pioneer Theodore von Kármán (1881-1963).
