In the municipality of Rennweg am Katschberg on the south side of the steep Katschberg Pass ( 1640  m above sea level ), a distinction is made between three landscapes from west to east: the (the) Lanisch, the Pölla (the Pöllatal), the Katschtal . "Katschtal" is a common landscape designation for the entire municipality.

Local history researcher Norbert Loquenz refers to a historical connection with the Styrian Katschtal: The Chaetzers ( Katschers ) , lords of Rouhen Castle Chaetz ( Rauchenkatsch ) in the Middle Ages , are said to have been relatives of the lords of the Styrian Katsch Castle .

In the west of the Katschtal, in Lanisch, are the easternmost three-thousand-meter peaks of the Alps and all of Central Europe. The highest of them is the Große Hafner ( 3,076  m above sea level ), which can be reached in a long morning from the Pöllatal via the picturesque Lanisch lakes . Shortly before the destination, the ridge presents itself to the eye like a sharp ax. However, the Hafner is more often climbed from the south - the Maltatal - where you can follow a toll road to the huge Kölnbreinsperre .

In the ridge of the Hafner Group , the eastern end of the mountain is formed by the peaks of the Malteiner Sonnblick ( 3030  m above sea level ) and the Mittlerer Sonnblick ( 3000  m above sea level ), a steep watershed between the nearby Lieser and Malta valleys.

If you look to the northwest from Rennweg, you will immediately notice the striking, steep rocky summit of the Kareck , which towers over the Katschbergpass. To the left of him opens the already mentioned, lovely Pölla high valley, which is sung about in some local songs. In the Lanisch-Alm the Lieser river rises from a rock face, the Lieser origin . Shortly after the source, a large part of the water flows through a tunnel into the above-mentioned. Kölnbreinsperre derived from the Maltatal. Of the Rauchenkatsch valley below Rennweg, it is said that you have to put on “an extra skirt” here.
