A cheese tart , and cheese cakes , Käsetünne or cheesecake is one in Switzerland popular spicy flat, mostly round, flat cakes . It consists of a cake batter (made from flour, salt, butter, sometimes with milk or cream, rarely with egg), a topping of grated hard cheese and a topping of cream , milk, flour or cornena and eggs. Mostly Emmentaler , Gruyère , Sbrinz or cheese mixtures are used as cheese. It is seasoned with salt, pepper and nutmeg . Sometimes onions or bacon are also added. Cheesecakes are eaten hot.

Cheesecake is one of the most popular flans in Switzerland . It is offered year-round in practically every bakery and is usually sold in pieces. Small round cheese cakes are also popular. These are called Chäs / Käschüechli in the dialect throughout German-speaking Switzerland , while the large cheesecake is regionally known as Chäs / Käschueche, -flade, -tünne, -wäh, -wääje etc., in French-speaking Switzerland as gateau au fromage . Cheesecakes and onion tarts are traditionally eaten at the Basel Carnival and the Bern onion market as well as other autumn markets.
