King Otto Chapel in Kiefersfelden

The König-Otto-Kapelle stands on the southwestern outskirts of Kiefersfelden at the foot of the Thierberg near the point where the old Inntalstraße left Bavaria - in the 19th century the Kingdom of Bavaria . King Ludwig I of Bavaria commissioned the building here in 1833 to commemorate the departure of his second eldest, then seventeen-year-old son Otto , to Greece in December 1832 , where he had been appointed the first Greek king six months earlier .

The small three-bay hall church with a polygonal sign and roof turret stands elevated on an above-ground crypt and is reached via an outside staircase . The design in neo-Gothic style - at a time when classicism still predominated - comes from the royal civil building inspector Joseph Daniel Ohlmüller . The construction was carried out between 1834 and 1836 by the Rosenheim master builder Johann Karmann. The consecration took place on June 19, 1836 .

The church patronage of the chapel is St. Otto after the patron saint of the king's son. The saint is also shown in the middle picture of the altar triptych , flanked by the patron saint of the father - Louis the Saint - and the patroness of mother Otto - Theresa von Avila - as intercessors for the young Otto and his rulership in Greece.

The chapel belongs to the parish Heilig Kreuz, Kiefersfelden . The tower and the roof of the chapel were renovated in 2013 after a tree fall caused by a landslide that severely damaged the structure.
