The Kong Christian den X's Bro ( German : "King Christian X. -Brücke") is a tied arch bridge in Denmark , which leads over the Alsensund through the city center of Sonderborg and connects the Sundewitt peninsula with the island of Alsen . The two-lane road and bascule bridge will be opened for shipping if necessary, which will then have a passage width of 30 meters.
history
The predecessor of the Kong Christian den X's Bro was a 220 meter long pontoon bridge , which was opened in 1856 and was named after the Danish King Frederik VII .
Plans for a new bridge over the Alsensund were presented to the Rigsdagen in 1923 by the then Minister for Public Works , Marius Abel Nielsen Slebsager . A year later, Parliament decided to build the bridge with Law No. 72 of March 29, 1924. The construction took place from 1925 to 1930. On October 7, 1930, the bridge was opened by its namesake, King Christian X.
The 331 meter long bridge was originally designed as a combined road and rail bridge. With the circular path on Alsen there was a connection to the ferry port Mommark , from which ferries ran to Fåborg on Funen . After rail traffic to Mommark was discontinued in 1962, the bridge was used for freight traffic until October 1, 1996.
Until the completion of the Alssundbroen in 1981, the bridge was the only permanent connection between Alsen and Sonderburg. The opening of the new bridge noticeably relieved traffic through Sønderborg.
