The Königsbrücke is a monument in the Bielefeld district of Jöllenbeck .

Location and history

The Königsbrücke is located near Eickumer Straße 214a, not far from the city limits of Herford . However, it is not to be found on today's state road L 543 , but south of the former county road to Herford. It spans the meadow valley of the Jöllenbeck mill stream , which here supplied the power for the Peppmühle , a historic water mill on the Peppmöller farm.

A bridge was built here as early as 1795, which became dilapidated after a few decades. A new building made of sandstone should improve the connection between Jöllenbeck and Herford and, in particular, facilitate transport by carts . King Friedrich Wilhelm III. supported the road construction there with 22,000 thalers . A legal dispute broke out between the mayor's office of Jöllenbeck and the State of Prussia over the cost of the new bridge from 1842, which ended in Jöllenbeck's favor. Prussia had to pay for the construction and maintenance. A royal emblem was attached as a possession symbol and the reference to the toll, which refers to Friedrich Wilhelm IV . This is why the building is also called the King's Bridge. After the expansion of the state road, the bridge lost its importance, but was declared a monument.

In 1988 the Heimatverein Jöllenbeck put up a memorial plaque for the bridge.
