Koenizer uprising

The Köniz uprising (or Kirchweih of Köniz ) took place on June 26, 1513 and was directed against the French influence on the Bern council.

On June 26th 1513 a church was consecrated in Köniz . In the festival community there were many Bernese travelers who had taken part in the battle of Novara on June 6, 1513 on the side of France. There were rumors in the crowd that members of the Bern Council were secretly receiving French pensions . 300 armed young men then moved towards Bern and penetrated the city. They harassed the old schoolboy Wilhelm von Diesbach , who however managed to calm the rebels during the night by making concessions.

The next day, however, the uprising spread to other communities around Bern. Schultheiss von Wattenwyl called the citizens of Bern to arms and had the city gates occupied. However, they saw themselves unable to calm the situation down, since rebellious peasants had already gathered in Wabern and therefore called the confederates to help.

On July 2, 1513, it came to the farewell to Köniz. The town clerk of Bern announced the names of those who had received French money to the assembled crowd. In the first place was Wilhelm von Diesbach, the leader of the French party. There were fines, repayments of pensions and even some death sentences . The city also promised that people receiving French pensions and some mercenary leaders would be punished. In contrast, all insurgents were offered impunity.

On July 28, 1513, the letter of the Kings was written. In this, the city of Bern granted the landscape the right to participate in future alliances with foreign powers by means of an official survey. The freedom letters of the rural communities were also renewed.
