Kössen formation

The Kössen Formation (also Kössen layers ) is a lithostratigraphic unit of the Northern Limestone Alps in the rank of a formation . Name-giving and type locality is the place Kössen in Tyrol . Rocks of the Kössen Formation also appear in the Tegernsee Mountains , in the Ester Mountains , as well as in the Ammergau , Lechtal and Allgäu Alps .

The Kössen Formation consists of alternating layers of dark gray claystones , marls and clayey limestones that were deposited on the shelf of the western Tethys Sea in the Upper Triassic ( Rhaetian ) . The rocks of the Kössen Formation are considered to be very rich in fossils .
