The Küchler monument in honor of the former Mayor of Worms and honorary citizen Wilhelm Küchler stands on Küchlerplatz in the Rhineland-Palatinate city of Worms . It is the first monument erected in Worms in the 20th century that was erected without a military context.

history

On the occasion of Küchler's death on October 31, 1900, the industrialist Cornelius Wilhelm von Heyl zu Herrnsheim called for donations in order to be able to erect and finance a commemorative monument to the deceased mayor and honorary citizen of the city of Worms. The monument was erected by the Karlsruhe sculptor Johannes Hirt , who originally came from Worms, and was unveiled on November 28, 1904. On this occasion, in addition to representatives of the city of Worms, high-ranking delegates from Darmstadt , numerous citizens, "on behalf of His Royal Highness the Grand Duke Secret Cabinet Councilor Roemheld, Finance Minister Gnauth", and Küchler's wife Emma with their daughter and two sons were present.

At the moment when the shell of the monument fell, an orchestra played Beethoven's setting of the poem The heavens boast of eternal honor .

The bronze sculpture on a granite base originally stood opposite the old town hall in Hagenstrasse on Lindenplatz, which was renamed Küchler-Platz. The memorial survived the aerial bombs towards the end of the Second World War , but it was removed as part of the reconstruction of the city in 1957. Küchler-Platz was no longer taken into account and disappeared.

today

In 2013, the monument was restored for around 19,000 euros and is now on Küchlerplatz, which is located between the Ernst Ludwig School and the Rhine Bridge .

Further honors

In addition to the Küchler memorial, there is the Küchler house in Worms on Friesenstrasse, which adorns its portrait above the entrance. Furthermore, Küchlerstraße, named after Küchler and east of the city center, has existed since 1982.
