Johannes Hirt (born April 27, 1859 in Worms , † October 30, 1917 in Karlsruhe ) was a German sculptor .

Life

Johannes Hirt studied with Fritz Schaper at the Berlin Art Academy . He worked at the carving school in Furtwangen before moving to Karlsruhe, where he worked with Adolf Heer . At times Hirt also lived and worked in Worms .

Works

Hirt created the Hygieia fountain in front of the Vierordtbad in Karlsruhe, as well as the figures of Badenia and Fidelitas as well as the gable reliefs on the Karlsruhe town hall. The two larger-than-life allegorical figures, each weighing around 2 tons, which Hirt created after a competition announced in 1897 for the facade design of the town hall and which had been placed on the stairs to the town hall in 1900, were donated as metal in 1940 as part of the second Dismantled and melted down during World War II .

Hirt was also involved in the design of the monument to Kaiser Wilhelm I by Adolf Heer , inaugurated in 1897 . His figure of the muse Klio , like the three other accompanying figures on the monument base, was melted down during World War II, although a plaster model of her in private ownership has been preserved.

The electroplating Hagen hurls the Nibelungenhort into the Rhine ( Hagendenkmal for short ) in Worms dates from 1905, and the high relief Siegfried kills the dragon at the Worms Festival Hall from 1906 . The model for the figure of Hagen, as Hirt created for Worms, was possibly a version by Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld . The figure stood in the Worms grove until 1932, then it was moved to its current location on the replica of the foundation of a Rhine crane.

Hirt designed tomb figures for the Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik (WMF) for series production as electroplating . One example of the model 774a that has been preserved is in the Ohlsdorf cemetery in Hamburg : Schrader / Prediger family grave (1899). Together with Army, he individually designed the reliefs on the gravestones of Frieda and Wilhelm Blos in the main cemetery in Karlsruhe . His portrait medallion of Wilhelm Blos from 1896 was removed when the tomb was being converted.
