Caraway Turkey
The expression Caraway Turkey comes from the student language of the late 18th century and originally referred to a student who came from the vicinity of his university . Today the term is mostly used as a racist slur.
The name comes from the fact that the area around the city of Halle , where this expression originated, was previously referred to as Caraway Turkey . At the time, a lot of caraway was grown there, and regions in Germany that were desolate and not very edifying were also referred to as Turkey .
In addition to this meaning, the word in colloquial language denotes a loudspeaker or eccentric . Interpretations that a Caraway Turk is a person of Turkish origin are based on false assumptions about the meaning of the word. After the recruitment agreement between the Federal Republic of Germany and Turkey and the associated immigration from Turkey to the Federal Republic of Germany , they spread as a dirty word in the 1970s . In Austria , the term is still used for foreigners, as well as in various German areas, for example the Ruhr area .
In Berlin and the surrounding area, Caraway Turkey is also used in reinforcing comparisons. For example, you toil like a caraway turk or you drink like a caraway turk.
