The coasters type Kümo 840, as a series North Star were known, a series of Peene shipyard in Wolgast from the time of the GDR .
history
The series was manufactured from 1960 to 1963 in 25 units. The 23 ships delivered to the Deutsche Seereederei (DSR) were named after stars in the northern sky and after places in Mecklenburg. They were mainly used in the large coastal voyages in the North and Baltic Seas and up to the Mediterranean. The ship type was based on the Kümo 500 or the Wolgast series, also developed by the Peene shipyard .
The first ship and namesake of the whole series was the Nordstern with hull number 47, which was handed over to DSR on March 31, 1960. Two ships of the series, the Algenib and Schedir of the DSR stock, were sold to the Vietnamese state shipping company in 1960 as Thon Nhuit and Doc-Lap to hand over.
The end of the series was the goods delivered on June 4, 1963 with construction number 90.
The Bellatrix and the Malchin were later converted into glue tankers .
The Rostock-based Nordstern has been used as a workshop ship for VEB Binnenreederei Anklam since 1978.
In 1979 the Poel also went to Vietnam as a solidarity gift.
technology
The type designation was originally derived from the load capacity (839.6 tons). The technical changes initiated by the client, such as ice reinforcement according to Finnish ice class Ic, higher superstructures and more modern, heavier boat launching devices, however, reduced the calculated useful load to approx. 760 tons. The ships were therefore temporarily designated as Kümo 760, but this did not prevail.
The ships are propelled by a 405 kW four-stroke diesel engine of the type R 8 DV 148 from the Magdeburg manufacturer VEB Schwermaschinenbau "Karl Liebknecht", which acts directly on the fixed propeller (diameter: 2.10 m) .
The hulls are welded , the deck structure is made of light metal , as in the Kümo 500 series .
The cargo hold with a ball space of 1456 m 3 and grain space of 1550 m 3 had two hatches, an intermediate deck, was divided by a transverse bulkhead and sealed with conventional shear bars , lids and tarpaulins so that it is seaworthy. The loading gear consisted of two on- board luffing cranes supplied by VEB Kranbau , Eberswalde, each for a 3 tonne load.
Radio equipment
The ships received the following radio equipment when they were put into service
- Main transmitter RFT 1410.17A5, 25 W.
- Emergency transmitter RFT 1410.17A5 with battery
- Receiver RFT 1410.17A6
- Telefunken SE102 / 2 lifeboat station
