Ko Nakahira

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kō Nakahira ( Japanese 中平 康 , born January 3, 1926 in Tokyo , † September 11, 1978 ) was a Japanese director and screenwriter .

Life

Kō Nakahira completed his training at the Shōchiku and Nikkatsu film studios . He has worked with directors such as Keisuke Kinoshita , Akira Kurosawa , Yūzō Kawashima , Minoru Shibuya , Tomotaka Tasaka and Kaneto Shindo .

In 1956 he made his debut as a director with the controversial film Kurutta kajitsu (international title Crazed Fruit ). The film deals with the conflict between two brothers who are in love with the same woman. The film is considered a milestone in the so-called Japanese New Wave . In 1957 he filmed Yukio Mishima's novel Bitoku no yoromeki . Even Shiki no aiyoku (1958) and Mikkai (1959) were well received by the critics. From the 1960s he filmed several conventional action thrillers for Nikkatsu.

Increasingly bored of the topics on offer, he moved to Hong Kong for a few years in 1967 , where he directed several crime films for the Shaw Brothers under the pseudonym Yang Shu Hsi .

In the early 1970s he returned to Japan and founded his own film production company. His first film, Yami no naka no chimimoryo , screened in the competition at the Cannes International Film Festival in 1971 . He made his last film Hensokyoku in 1976.

He died two years later at the age of 52.

In 2014, some of his works were shown at the Nippon Connection film festival in Frankfurt am Main and in a retrospective at the Japanese Cultural Institute in Cologne.
