Kathleen Toria McFarland (born July 22, 1951 in Madison , Wisconsin ; mostly referred to in the media as KT McFarland ) is an American government official and political commentator who represents radical foreign policy views.

In the 1970s she worked for the National Security Council during the reigns of Presidents Nixon and Ford , and in the 1980s for the US Department of Defense under Ronald Reagan . In 2006 she applied unsuccessfully for the Republican Party's candidacy in the United States Senate elections , justifying her attempt by stating that far too few serious candidacies were taking place in states that had been party to a party for decades, and that this would erode the two-party system as de facto one-party rule let. After that, McFarland often appeared as an analyst for the TV network Fox News and regularly hosted the DEFCON 3 program for the station , which made her - without any connection to his campaign team - a valued face for President-elect Donald Trump and the offer at the end of 2016 got to serve on the new staff in the White House .

In the spring of 2017, McFarland was therefore for a few months the deputy of the national security advisers Michael Flynn and HR McMaster in the cabinet of US President Donald Trump ; in May of that year she resigned in favor of Ricky L. Waddell , the preferred candidate of her temporary new boss McMaster. As planned in the previous weeks during the search for her successor, she was then nominated for the position of US ambassador to Singapore in the same month . After its successful hearing in September, the Senate was initially unable to confirm it because it was not put on the agenda in the months that followed. In the course of the Russia investigation against Michael Flynn, McFarland finally came into focus in December of that year, as it turned out that she had forwarded information from Flynn from the conversation with Sergei Kisljak to her phone and she along with it before the government took office Jared Kushner had instructed Flynn to make his now admitted false testimony to the FBI. As a result, her application as ambassador was returned by the Senate. Just days after the government nevertheless renewed its nomination, it announced its withdrawal in February 2018.
