The K1 Type 88 is a South Korean main battle tank . It was developed in the early 1980s by Hyundai Rotem and General Dynamics on behalf of the South Korean government and handed over to the South Korean army in 1988 .
The special South Korean requirements in the development and production of this battle tank were taken into account, for example the body size of the soldiers and the special terrain conditions. The shape of the hull and the turret are based on the German Leopard 2 battle tank and the American M1A1 , and the composite armor used there is also used. The overall elevation of the tank is very low with a height of 2.25 meters for a turret tank. The hydropneumatic suspension allows the cannon to be increased in height and depth, an important military requirement given the mountainous landscape of the Korean Peninsula .
The engine block consists of an 8-cylinder diesel engine with 880 kW (1200 hp) from MTU Friedrichshafen and a ZF automatic transmission. The fire control system consists of American components. The main armament is the 105 mm L7 drawn barrel cannon, which is widely used around the world . The further developed K1A1 is armed with the 120 mm smoothbore cannon developed by Rheinmetall and, thanks to the thermal imaging device, is fully capable of night combat.
