CAIROS. The right moment in Venice in autumn 2018

CAIROS. The right moment is an art project by the art collector Christian Zott , who for this exhibition combines photographs by the Italian photographer Mauro Fiorese and paintings by the painter Wolfgang Beltracchi in a tour through 2000 years of art history. The Kairos exhibition was presented to a wide audience as a traveling exhibition in Venice, Hamburg and Vienna and has been on display at the mSE Kunsthalle in Unterammergau since autumn 2019 .

Concept and development

The exhibition is named after the Greek god Kairos , who stands for the right moment of a decision. The exhibition tries to illustrate art history as a plethora of decisions that together determine which works can be seen. Fiorese's photographs show the storage rooms of important European museums and thus an overabundance of works of art that do not occupy a prominent place in art history. Beltracchi's paintings, on the other hand, show, as fictional key works, motifs and events from history that could have been painted by important painters in art history. CAIROS. In this way, the right moment tries to raise awareness of the constant development and re-examination of art history, and it introduces the history of style and the historical background of art.

Treasure Rooms by Mauro Fiorese

Mauro Fiorese started the Treasure Rooms series in 2014 in collaboration with his Veronese gallery Boxart and in the following years visited the museum depots of almost all important Italian museums such as the Villa Borghese and the National Archaeological Museum in Naples . The photographs were exhibited in the Robert Mann Gallery in New York in autumn 2016 and in Verona in summer 2019. For his series, Fiorese won the Codice MIA Prize of the Milan Photo Fair in 2015 and was honored in 2016 at the Wold Economic Forum in Davos.

Beltracchi's Kairos painting

Inspired by Fiorese's Treasure Rooms, Christian Zott planned to combine the photographs with what appeared to be historical key works, and in 2015 signed a contract with the painter Wolfgang Beltracchi, who had previously become known as an art forger. A research team, supported by well-known scientists such as the Byzantinist Sergei Mariev and the art historian Rainer Metzger , worked with the initiator and artist to look for important historical events and motifs that could have been painted by the great painters of art history, but were not painted. In order to fill these “gaps”, Beltracchi created a total of 28 paintings with a stylistic range from Roman antiquity to the middle of the 20th century until the exhibition opened in autumn 2018. The artists in whose handwriting Beltracchi worked include Lucas Cranach the Elder , Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio , William Turner , Claude Monet , Vincent van Gogh , Pablo Picasso and Max Ernst .

Exhibition locations

The premiere took place in October 2018 in the state rooms of the Biblioteca Marciana on St. Mark's Square in Venice. This was followed in November by Barlach Halle K in Hamburg as the second exhibition venue. The opening speech was given by the art historian Horst Bredekamp . The Kairos exhibition in Hamburg was accompanied by a project in which pupils from Wilhelm-Gymnasium developed and conducted guided tours independently. In September 2019, the exhibition in the Bank Austria Kunstforum Wien was opened by the art historian Rainer Metzger. KAIROS opened in November 2019 .
