Rainer Metzger

Rainer Metzger (born July 3, 1961 in Geisenhausen , Lower Bavaria ) is a German art historian , author , curator and critic . He has been teaching art history at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe since 2004 .

Life

Metzger studied art history , modern history and modern German literature in Munich and Augsburg from 1982 to 1988 . During his studies he published art-critical texts and essays in daily newspapers and art magazines. After graduating, the first major publications followed, including a two-volume monograph on Vincent van Gogh (together with Ingo F. Walther) for Taschen Verlag . From 1989 to 1990 Metzger was an assistant at the master class for experimental design ( Wolfgang Flatz ) at the University for Artistic and Industrial Design Linz (then still a university). In 1994 he received his doctorate "summa cum laude" with a dissertation on "Art in Postmodernism. Dan Graham" , which was published two years later by Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König. In the same year, 1994, Metzger moved from Munich to Vienna and worked as an editor for visual arts and architecture for the daily newspaper Der Standard , which he left in 1997. From 1997 to 2000 he was employed as a research assistant at the Institute for Art History at the University of Stuttgart and from 1997 to 2002 he was also a visiting professor at the University of Artistic and Industrial Design in Linz . At the same time, he was writing a habilitation thesis entitled "Art of literality - literal art. An attempt at an iconology of modernity" , which was accepted in 2002. Metzger then taught as a private lecturer at the Institute for Art History at the University of Stuttgart until 2004 . In October 2004, Metzger moved to Karlsruhe and has since taught art history at the State Academy for Fine Arts. He has been a corresponding member of the Vienna Secession since 1997 . Metzger lives with his wife, the critic Daniela Gregori, and two daughters in Karlsruhe and Vienna.

As a freelance author and art critic, Metzger has been writing regularly since the nineties for the daily newspapers Der Standard , Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , Süddeutsche Zeitung , Tages-Anzeiger and the art magazines Kunstforum International , Camera Austria and Parnass . Since 2001 he has been the author of the “Relectures” column for Kunstforum international . Between 2001 and 2017, Metzger wrote a blog for the online art magazine artmagazine.cc . In addition to his publications in print and online media, he has written numerous catalog texts on the artists Franz Ackermann , Stephan Balkenhol , Erwin Bohatsch , Xenia Hausner , Gustav Kluge , Rosa Loy , Markus Lüpertz , Lois Renner , Martin Walde , Lawrence Weiner , zur Olbricht Collection and for the group exhibitions “Desired Worlds. In addition to his journalistic activities, Metzger has participated in numerous exhibitions as a curator or artistic advisor, including “FLATZ - Images of Violence” ( Kunsthalle Krems ), “Images of Violence” ( Museumsquartier Wien ) and “Context: War” (in collaboration with Viennese galleries) as part of the event series “Art against Violence” in 2002. Together with Christa Steinle , he curates the exhibition “Religion Power Art - The Nazarenes ” in the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt (2005). Metzger was a scientific advisor for the exhibition project " Mozart " (2006) in the Albertina in Vienna. With the artist Eduard Angeli , he set up his exhibition at the Museo Correr in Venice in 2008 .

From 2001 to 2003, Metzger was a member of the artistic advisory board of the Admont Benedictine Abbey . From 2004 to 2007 he was appointed to the Advisory Board for Fine Arts of the Federal Chancellery of the Republic of Austria . Since autumn 2017 he has been a member of the scientific advisory board of Zott artspace in Munich and since autumn 2018 he has been a member of the purchasing jury for the art acquisitions of the Ministry of Science, Research and Art of the State of Baden-Württemberg .
