Sergei Mariev

Sergei Mariev (* 1976 in St. Petersburg ) is a German Byzantinist of Russian origin.

Mariev studied Classical Philology (Classical Studies, Classical Civilization) at Brigham Young University in Provo ( Utah ) (1993-1996, BA) and then Byzantine, Greek Studies and Latin Philology of the Middle Ages at the University of Munich (1996-2002, MA) . He received his doctorate in 2005 from the University of Munich with a critical edition and translation of the Chronicle of John of Antioch , which was published in print in 2008 in the series Corpus Fontium Historiae Byzantinae . In 2013 he completed his habilitation in Byzantine Studies and Modern Greek Philology at the Institute for Byzantine Studies, Byzantine Art History and Neo- Greek Studies at the University of Munich and acquired German citizenship . His habilitation with the title Aesthetic Theories in Byzantium was awarded the Habilitation Prize of the Society of Friends and Patrons of the University of Munich in 2014. V. excellent. Between 2008 and 2013 he was Academic Councilor a. Z. and since 2014 he has been a senior academic councilor a. Currently at the University of Munich. Since 2011 he has been honorary secretary of the German Working Group for the Promotion of Byzantine Studies (DAFBS).

His main research interests are in Byzantine historiography , Greek palaeography and Byzantine philosophy. He is the founder and editor of the series "Byzantine Archives - Series Philosophica" (since 2017)
