Philosophical library

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Philosophical Library (PhB) is a series of books for primary philosophical literature from antiquity to the present.

history

The “Philosophical Library” was founded in 1868 by the lawyer and politician Julius Hermann von Kirchmann (1802–1884) with the aim of making scientifically compiled editions of classical texts available. It was supposed to "gradually bring the major works of philosophy of old and new times into cheap editions, and indeed everywhere in the most correct text and, for works in a foreign language, in the new German translation". The titles were initially published by Kirchmann himself. He also wrote numerous explanatory volumes. The publisher's editor and theologian Friedrich Michael Schiele , who had been planning to expand the “Philosophical Library” since 1905, played a key role in the further development of the series .

The “Philosophical Library” was published by Ludwig Heimann (Berlin) until 1872. After several changes ( Erich Koschny , Georg Weiss, Philosophisch-Historischer Verlag Dr. R. Salinger ), she took over the Dürr'sche bookstore in Leipzig in 1900 . The series has been published by Felix Meiner Verlag since 1911 .

The volume editors usually provide introductions, explanations and further bibliographies. The philosophical texts themselves are presented in translation or in two languages. In addition to the classic works of the history of philosophy, numerous lesser-known and well-known texts have also been published. The individual volumes are supplemented by selected and complete editions as well as study books and dictionaries on the overall philosophical topic and on individual areas.

According to the publisher, around 500 titles by around 140 authors are currently available.
