The KFBE ET 1281-1288 were electric multiple units of the Cologne-Frechen-Benzelrath Railway (KFBE). They ran on 1200 volts DC and were the company's first electric railcars. They were used as an intercity tram between Cologne , Frechen and Benzelrath .

history

When the Cologne-Frechen-Benzelrath Railway switched its passenger traffic from meter gauge to standard gauge and electrified the lines, eight railcars were ordered from the Herbrand wagon factory in 1911 . The vehicles drove in the urban area of Cologne according to the tram building and operating regulations , or their Prussian predecessor building and operating regulations for trams with machine operation , in the area between Cologne and Frechen they were traveling according to the railway building and operating regulations . The railcars had to comply with both regulations. The drivers need a special permit for this route.

Due to delays in concessions, the vehicles could not be used until 1914. In 1921 four sidecars and a few freight cars were added, with which the railcars sometimes drove mixed trains. The line was designated as Line F , the vernacular made the Finchen train out of the vehicles .

The railcars were initially equipped with two pantographs each , only after the Second World War they could be seen with one pantograph.

After five decades in overland traffic between the cities and in the city traffic of Cologne and Frechen, they were replaced by more modern vehicles. In the end, the railcars 1282 , 1283 and 1285-1288 and some sidecars were still available. The railcars 1285 and 1286 and the sidecar 1257 were designated as museum vehicles from 1969.

These were used in 1977 for the 100th anniversary of the Cologne transport company and received a general overhaul in 1981 with the installation of the necessary safety devices. They are available for special trips.
