The KHD A6M 420 R type C was a three-axle diesel locomotive with rod drive , which was designed for shunting service. A total of 17 locomotives were built by Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz (KHD) between 1940 and 1943 . These were occasionally in use until the 1980s.

A locomotive of the Wilhelmshaven suburban railway was in service until 1988 and has been preserved as a memorial in Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg .

development

From 1933, the locomotives manufactured by KHD were built using the modular principle with engines with upright cylinders. The type of engine is included in the locomotive designation. In A6M 420 R type C results in A = stationary motor vehicle, 6 = number of cylinders, M = Cooling water cooled , the following 4 is the fourth embodiment of an engine 20 piston stroke = 20 cm. R is a shunter.

With the same engine, locomotives as the KHD A6M 420 R type B series were built with two axles.

Because of their power and top speed, the locomotives were only suitable for subordinate services. They were used on works railways and in industrial companies, especially in the navy , the Reichswerke Hermann Göring , Deutsche Erdöl AG , the Wandsbeker Industriebahn and IG Farben . The Augsburg Local Railway and the Cologne-Bonn Railways also received a copy each.

technology

The locomotives have a machine front end and a driver's cab behind it. The power was transmitted by means of a rod drive , with the jackshaft as a transmission output shaft under the driver's cab behind the drive wheels. The locomotives had a connecting rod and coupling rods as well as a high-speed six-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine from KHD, which was followed by a gearbox with reversing gear after a dry single-disk clutch .

commitment

Cologne-Bonn Railways V2

The locomotive used by the Cologne-Bonn Railways was the second KHD locomotive and was designated as V2 . The locomotive was in operation until 1969 when it was retired. The whereabouts are unknown.

Augsburg local railway

The locomotive of the Augsburg Local Railway was given to a private company in 1953. It was listed as available until 1999 . Their whereabouts are not known.

Wilhelmshaven suburban railway

The locomotive delivered to the Navy was decommissioned in 1988 after deployments on the Wilhelmshaven suburban railway (designation VBW D31 ) and a refinery in Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg . In 1999 it was erected as a memorial in front of a company in Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg.

Bentheim Railway D 11

The locomotive with the serial number 42860 was also delivered to the Wilhelmshaven naval shipyard in 1943. After the Second World War, it was first used by the Emsland agriculture and peat industry in Meppen and in 1949 came to the Bentheimer Eisenbahn . The locomotive was first numbered D1 and from 1956 the number D 11 . Her area of responsibility was the shunting service in Nordhorn . In 1958 it was handed over to the Pfleiderer & Co paper mill in Teisnach . Here it was used until an engine failure in 1985, after which it was parked and scrapped a year later.
