The KLIA Ekspres connects Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) with the main train station in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur .
Planning history
As early as 1995, the Malaysian government tendered the privatization of the rail link from Kuala Lumpur Sentral (KLS) in Brickfields to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) in Sepang . The partnership between Tabung Haji Technologies (THT) and YTL Corporation Bhd (YTL) , from which the concession company Express Rail Link Sdn. Bhd. (ERLSB) received the project from the Malaysian government in November 1995. On August 25, 1997, a concession agreement was signed for the planning, financing, construction, management, operation and maintenance of the link. The concession company then awarded the contract to the SYZ Consortium .
The KLIA Ekspres was finally commissioned in August 1999 to the German-Malaysian consortium SYZ Consortium under the leadership of Siemens Transportation Systems . Consortium partner was Syarikat Pembenaan Yeoh Tiong Lay Sdn. Bhd. (SPYTL). Twelve locomotives were delivered between September 2001 and May 2002 .
In 2002 the railway line went into operation. The KLIA Ekspres was the first regular gauge line in Malaysia that neither uses the existing route network nor the meter gauge built by the British in the colonies .
business
The 57-kilometer journey takes exactly 28 minutes or 33 minutes on the extended route. The trains run every 15 or 20 minutes.
The KLIA Ekspres runs from the airport to Kuala Lumpur Sentral Central Station without stopping .
Four of the trains will be used as Klia Transit regional trains with an additional three intermediate stops between the airport and the city center. The stops are in Bandar Tasik Selatan , Putrajaya and Salak Tinggi .
In 2014 an extension of the route was inaugurated. Since then, the trains have been serving the stop in the new terminal klia2 . This section is a little over two kilometers long and the journey time between the terminals is three minutes.
vehicles
Technically, the electrically operated low-floor vehicles of the type "ET 425 M" are twelve four-part railcars with a top speed of 160 km / h. The aluminum vehicles are fully air-conditioned, have toilets, a luggage compartment and a passenger information system. They use a train control system called ZSL-90 originally developed for Swiss narrow-gauge railways .
