Derivation

The form of both kana is derived from the kanji加. This is pronounced in modern standard Chinese as jia1, in Korean as ka.

variants

The Kana can be expanded with the Dakuten , to が in Hiragana, ガ in Katakana, and thus ga in the Hepburn system . The phonetic value is modified to the form [gɑ] at the beginning and varies between [ŋa] and [ɣa] in the middle of the word.

The hand acute (゜) does not appear with ka in normal Japanese texts. But it is sometimes used by linguists to indicate the nasal pronunciation [ŋa] .
