The hose fungus Kabatiella zeae , synonym: Aureobasidium zeae (Narita & Y. Hiratsuka) JM Dingley , belongs to the class of Dothideomycetes and causes the eye spot disease .

description

Kabatiella zeae was first described on the Japanese island of Hokkaido and causes numerous round spots with brown-gray to brown-purple edges, which are surrounded by a yellow halo. The fungus was later discovered in America , New Zealand and Europe and has so far only been isolated from the host plant maize . The fungus persists on crop residues and reproduces via asexual conidia, so that clean plowing is one of the most important control measures. Yield losses due to the pathogen can occur especially with long-term monoculture and minimal tillage.
