The kachess lake is a lake in Kittitas County in the US state of Washington . The lake is about 17 km long and 18.6 km² in size. The upper part of the lake is also known as Little Kachess Lake . The lake is mainly fed by the Kachess River , a small river that rises in the Snoqualmie Alpine Wilderness . The Kachess River leaves the lake in the south through the Kachess Dam .

The Kachess Dam is a 35 m high earth dam that further dams the natural Kachess Lake. The dam was built from 1910 to 1912 by the Bureau of Reclamation as part of the Yakima Project to irrigate the Yakima Valley on an Ice Age moraine . The dammed Kachess Lake has a volume of 294 million m³. The name Kachess comes from an Indian language and means "rich in fish" in contrast to Keechelus Lake , which is called "poor in fish". The lake is located in the Wenatchee National Forest . There is a campsite on the shores of Kachess Lake, the lake is a popular destination for water sports enthusiasts and anglers. Common fish for fishing include sockeye salmon , cutthroat trout and rainbow trout .
