The Kacza ( Kashubian Kaczô or Kaczô Strëga , German Katzfließ ) is a river in the Polish Pomeranian Voivodeship and the largest flowing water in the city of Gdynia .
course
The river flows slowly in the upper reaches. In the middle section it crosses the nature reserve Kacze Łęgi , has a larger inflow on the right side through the Maria source and the character of a freely meandering mountain stream with rapids. At the end of the natural course, in the Mały Kack district, there is the Ujęcie wody Sieradzka waterworks . The Kacza then flows through the Redłowska Valley in the urban area of Gdynia, where it is canalised and partly underground. It opens in Gdynia in the district of Orłowo in the Gulf of Gdansk . It carries the largest amounts of water in spring, the lowest water level is measured in midsummer.
Use and flood
In the past, several watermills were operated on the Kacza. There were several floods: the worst occurred in the period between the wars on May 16 and 17, 1937, when six bridges, three mills and 500 meters of road were destroyed. A layer of sand and mud up to 2 meters thick covered the surrounding fields and gardens. Measurements at that time showed that the flow rate measured in Orłowo was 111 m³ / s, the average normal water volume is approx. 10.6% of it. The last severe flood took place in 1957.
