Outline map of the Le Maire Islands |
Kadovar , formerly also called Blosseville Island , is a small volcanic island in the South Pacific island state of Papua New Guinea ( East Sepik Province ).
The approximately 2 km² island is the southernmost of the Le Maire Islands and is 45 km east of the mainland ( Cape Girgir ) and 5 km south of the island of Blup Blup . The highest point of Kadovar is 365 m above sea level. The few inhabitants of the island settle in small villages on the west coast and live from fishing.
Beginning on January 5, 2018, the eponymous volcano ejected an ash cloud , the eruption column of which reached a height of a good two kilometers. This is the first known Kadovar eruption, and it may be one of the two previously unlocated "burning islands" that the explorer William Dampier described during a voyage to the region in 1699 and 1700. The 2,000 residents of Kadovar were evacuated to the neighboring island of Blup Blup as a precaution, initial reports spoke of a good 700 evacuees based on the local electoral roll.
