Kaiapoi is a town in the Waimakariri District of Canterbury on the South Island of New Zealand .

Origin of name

The name Kaiapoi comes from the Māori language and means something like "food depot".

geography

The city is approximately 15 km north of Christchurch city ​​center and 4 km west of the coast to the Pacific Ocean . The Kaiapoi River flowing through the city flows 2 km east into the Waimakariri River , which flows 2.5 km further into the Pacific Ocean.

For the 2013 census, the city had 9255 inhabitants, making it the second largest city in the district.

history

A fortified settlement ( ) built by the Māori around 1700 was named Kaiapoi . The city emerged from here and was an important trading center between 1850 and 1870.

Road traffic

The New Zealand State Highway 1 runs through Kaiapoi in a north-south direction and connects the city with Christchurch in the south and Amberley in the north. Within the city, the New Zealand State Highway 71 branches off from State Highway 1 to the west.

Rail transport

Parallel to State Highway 1 , the South Island Main Trunk Railway also runs through the city and connects Kaiapoi with Christchurch and southern parts of the east coast and the northern part of the South Island.
