Kairana is a city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh .

The city is part of the Shamli District, founded in 2017 . Before that it belonged to the Muzaffarnagar district . Kairana has the status of Nagar Palika Parishad . Kairana is located approx. 663 km from Uttar Pradesh's capital Lucknow and is part of the National Capital Region . The city is divided into 25 wards (constituencies).

As of 2016, over 250 Hindu families had fled the city after being threatened by local Muslims.

Demographics

The city's population is 89,000 according to the 2011 census. Kairana has a gender ratio of 892 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus typical for India. The literacy rate was 47.2% in 2011, well below the national average. Almost 81% of the population are Muslims , approx. 18% are Hindus and approx. 1% belong to another or no religion. 16.3% of the population are children under 6 years of age.
