Kairo 678 is a feature film released in 2010 by the Egyptian director Mohamed Diab. Diab is considered one of the most promising young Egyptian filmmakers. The film deals with the topic of sexual violence in Egypt .

In Germany, the film opened on March 8, 2012 at Arsenal Filmverleih .

action

Mohamed Diab's film debut tells of three Egyptian women from different social classes who no longer want to put up with male abuse. Fayza (Boshra) is groped in the overcrowded buses of the metropolis, Seba (Nelly Karim) was the victim of mass rape years ago in the presence of her husband. He cannot help her, which shames him deeply, and the marriage fails as a result. Nelly manages to get a group of spectators to help her against a truck driver's assault.

All three defend themselves in their own way: Fayza stabs the men on the bus with a knife in the genital area; Seba gives self-defense courses for women and Nelly reports sexual harassment to the police, but fails. She is the first woman who dares to report something like this to be invited to a television show.

reception

The film received numerous positive reviews in the press. Beatrice Behn writes on Kino-Zeit.de: “Cairo 678 continues the Arab revolution on another level in the cinema”, while the Hollywood Reporter attests the film's outstanding acting achievements. The film was quite controversial in Egypt. He has been criticized for citing the frustration of Egyptian men as the cause of sexual harassment.

Mahmoud Hanfy Mahmoud, spokesman for a human rights organization, saw the knife Fayza was carrying as a reason to want the film to be banned. The authors resisted, arguing that they were simply portraying the everyday behavior of women.

Awards

At the Dubai International Film Festival 2010 Boshra was named Best Actress and Maged El Kedwany named Best Actor. In 2011, “Kairo 678” won the Silver Hugo for Best Feature Film and Maged El Kedwany for Best Actor at the Chicago International Film Festival . Also in 2011, Nahed El Sebaï received the Best Actress award at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards, and the film was also awarded the Grand Jury Prize there.
