The Kaiser Friedrich Museum of the city of Görlitz was housed in the rooms of the Oberlausitz memorial hall and existed from 1904 to 1945.

task

The establishment of the museum dedicated to the fine arts and applied arts was closely linked to the creation of the Oberlausitzer Memorial Hall. In the call for the construction of the memorial hall from December 1888 it said:

“... Otherwise these halls should serve the purpose of being used for art exhibitions and to accommodate the beginnings of a painting collection in our city. The municipal arts and crafts and antiquity collections are to be housed in the rooms on the first floor. "

- Call of the Hall of Fame Committee of December 1888

In 1903, the teacher Ludwig Feyerabend was appointed director of the museum, and he dedicated himself to the establishment of the museum with great commitment. Shaped by his work for the Society for Anthropology and Prehistory of Upper Lusatia , he initially managed the prehistoric collections in Görlitz

  • the collection of the Society for Anthropology and Prehistory of Upper Lusatia
  • the collection of the municipal museum of antiquity and art as well
  • the armory of the town hall

together.

The main focus was set:

"To give a clear picture of the history, cultural-historical and handicraft development of the entire Upper Lusatia ... and thus promote a knowledge of and love of the homeland"

- Ludwig Feyerabend 1912

and through donations and a collection plan that corresponded to the limited purchasing budget, an extremely rich collection could be assembled.

implementation

The following description of the museum is taken from an essay by Ludwig Feyerabend from 1927.

First floor

  • Local lore department : In addition to thousands of views, maps and pictures of Upper Lusatia, Jakob Böhme's rebuilt shoemaker's workshop with interesting originals was shown here.
  • Picture gallery : In addition to the focus on Upper Lusatian art since around 1800, pictures from the 19th century from the art movements of the Classicists , Nazarenes and Romanticism were also shown.

Well-known artists were:

Main floor

Jakob Böhme: Representation of his cosmogony in the form of a drawing

The Upper Lusatian arts and crafts were located on the main floor , where formerly works made of wrought iron, ceramics and glass, as well as furniture, weapons, jewelry and a dacty library could be seen. Furthermore, there was a collection of culture from Upper Lusatia with ecclesiastical, knightly and guild antiquities, including folk costumes, magnificent choir stalls from the former Franciscan church in Görlitz and a Jakob Böhme disk.

ground floor

  • Completion of the cultural history department : with pieces from different centuries, with a down-to-earth apartment furnishings, a guild room and a folklore department with an Upper Lusatian farmer's room. Two important Christmas cribs and a coin cabinet were also on display.
  • Prehistoric department : The main part was devoted to the development of the prehistoric Upper Lusatian culture, from approx. 4000 BC. BC to AD 1000. This large collection originated mainly from the Society for Anthropology and Prehistory of Upper Lusatia.

Extensions

The constantly growing collections of the museum required an extension, which the Wroclaw architect Hans Poelzig was to be commissioned with. The First World War and the subsequent inflation ruined the plans. Only in 1932 could this plan be partially implemented with the opening of the Kaisertrutz as the historical museum of the city of Görlitz.
