Christoph Nathe

Christoph Nathe (born January 3, 1753 in Nieder-Bielau near Penzig ; † December 10, 1806 in Schadewalde near Marklissa ) was a German miniature painter , watercolorist and etcher .

Along with Franz Gareis and Heinrich Theodor Wehle, Nathe was one of the three Upper Lusatian painters who lived around 1800 and were of supraregional importance.

Life

Christoph Nathe came from a farming family. He received his school education at the Görlitzer Gymnasium. Johann Gottfried Schultz gave him his first drawing lessons . In 1774 Nathe went to Leipzig to study with Adam Friedrich Oeser . Between 1783 and 1784 Nathe made a trip to Switzerland . In 1787 he took over the post of director of the Görlitz drawing school and taught at the grammar school. In 1795 he married Caroline von Meyer, who died in 1798. Thanks to his wife's inherited fortune, he was able to quit his position as director in 1799. In 1801 he was invited to Rome by a former college friend . There he learned Italian.

Nathe mainly drew landscapes, such as those of the Giant Mountains or Switzerland.

The Graphisches Kabinett in the Kulturhistorisches Museum Görlitz preserves the most extensive inventory of his works.
