Theodor Thieme

Gotthold Theodor Thieme (born August 16, 1823 in Görlitz , Kingdom of Prussia , † October 31, 1901 in Plauen near Dresden , Kingdom of Saxony ) was a German lithographer and painter .

Thieme attended the Augustum grammar school in Görlitz , but was unable to take the Abitur for financial reasons . As the son of a lithographer, the artistically gifted student first learned this profession in his father's institution and later also in Dresden .

With the support of the city of Görlitz he was able to attend the Dresden Art Academy in 1844 , where he was a master student of the Düsseldorf professor Julius Huebner . From 1851 to 1855 he went on a study trip that took him to Antwerp and Paris . Subsequently, he settled in Dresden as a portrait and history painter and also ran a real estate business.

Thieme was not only valued by the Dresden bourgeoisie as a portrait painter. Among other things, he received the order from the city administration of Görlitz to paint several mayors, city councilors and pastors.

Thieme died on October 31, 1901 in Plauen near Dresden and was buried in the Inner Plauen Cemetery , the churchyard of the Church of the Resurrection .

Works

16 of his paintings, several drawings and graphics are in the possession of the Kulturhistorisches Museum Görlitz . Most of his works were destroyed in the bombing of Dresden in 1945 .
